Santorini Wines
Santorini is producing wine for more than 2.500 years.The major local grapes are Assyrtiko ,that reminds of a sauvignon blanc ,Athiri ,Aidani that is light and refreshing for the Summer and there is also the grape Katsano which was almost extinct.As for the red grapes of Santorini there a few worth mentioning like the Mavrotragano which produces full body wines that like to be aged, then we have the common Mandilaria which produces many table wines and the last I am going to mention is the Voudomato grape which is quite interesting.
The types of wines that are produces in Santorini are :
Appellation of origin of superior quality for the wines made from Assyrtiko - Athiri - Aidani, for the Nikteri type of wines and the Vinsanto wines.
Assyrtiko - Athiri - Aidani are all white grapes and produce high quality wines.
Mandilaria is a red grape that produces table wines.
Mavrotragano is a very interesting red grape that covers only the 4% of the total production of the island.This grape was almost lost for ever but oenologist Haridimos Hatzidakis brought it back and produced in 1997 the first 100% Mavrotragano red wine that is still today considered experimental.Since then also other producers have helped to keep this grape alive by producing more wine from Mavrotragano like the Domaine Sigalas and the Estate Argyros as well as Santo Wines.
Vinsanto, the translation of this wine is "The wine of Santorini".
You may think that it is the same as the Italian Vinosanto but the only similarity between these two wines is that they are both sweet.
Vinsanto is made only by white grapes ( Assyrtiko - Athiri - Aidaini).
The possess ,after picking the best grapes that arrive on each winery the producers leave the grapes in the Sun for 10-12 days (sun-dried).After that they have to keep the wine at least three years in a French oak barrel to ferment.
Top recommendation : Estate Argyros Vinsanto 1989.
